1 Biography or Not[ | ]

Jang Pillsoon 장 필 순 張 弼 順 Jang Pillsoon is a veteran of the Korean music scene and has been making music since the mid-eighties. She has 5 solo albums and 2 best-of albums to her credit, and has been involved in many recordings. Her music is characterized by a voice often loosely described as husky. Unlike many female singers she prefers to sing in the lower register and applies an untrained, folk music style voice to her music, resulting in a style that is very warm, human and personal.
Her early albums, recorded from the late eighties to the mid-nineties could almost be lost amongst other middle of the road Korean pop. However, there is something different about it. The early music fits on a continuum somewhere between pretty but insipid Kenny G muzak and the more complex and textured jazz-inspired rock of Van Morrison. A change in style can be detected around the third album (circa 1992). My first impression of the third album was that it could have been made for the South American market except for the Korean lyrics. Samba and jazz rhythms dominate and the pop muzak qualities are far less obtrusive. The core of the current backing band came together on this album.

The forth album, released in 1995 displays another change. The album is a very eclectic mix of jazz and latin influenced songs, catchy pop and almost timeless classic rock styles. There may be something for everyone in this album but as a package it doesn't quite come together and the rock songs don't quite achieve their potential impact, seemingly held back by the targeting of a perceived conservative audience. It is worth listening to as it contains some great songs.

By the time the fifth album was released in the summer of 1997, the team had gelled and found a clear direction. The Pillsoon team has clearly become a rock act but without abandoning the folk music roots or the soulful ballads that have always been a hallmark of Pillsoon's style. The album starts with a couple of slow ballads, the first sounding a little like a George Martin Beatles production, and builds into up-tempo songs that roll along very smoothly. Apart from the lyrics, there are few signs that the album is aimed at Korean tastes and it fits together as a timeless product that could come from any country with a modern, well-developed music industry.

The core of the band is known as the Jo Dong-ik band and have done recordings in their own right. Mostly they belong the Hana Music management stable and draw on other musicians from their company, as well as outside to create rich, well-crafted recordings. Although Jang Pillsoon is a single performer, the music is a team effort with several people contributing to writing, recording and performing. It would be reasonable to think of the act as The Jang Pillsoon Band or Jang Pillsoon & the Jo Dong-ik band.

Currently the Jang Pillsoon team does concerts around Korea throughout the year. In 1997, there were four concert series, each lasting about 10 days, in Seoul over the course of the year, as well as personal appearances at university festivals and rare appearances on TV shows like Lee So-ra's Propose. The concerts are well-worth catching. They follow the Korean style, being two parts separated by a guest appearance or two in the middle. Experience has taught Pillsoon to arrange the set list well, with emotional climaxes in both parts resulting in a dynamic and refreshing listening experience.

A sixth album is production but it's release has been delayed by a desire to re-record the material. The songs I have heard at recent concerts remind me of late sixties music when writers were experimenting with psychedelic influences and were getting more intellectually sophisticated but the songs hadn't lost their pop feel.

You can say she is THE female folk singer in Korea, I guess. She's been singing with Korean folk musicians for over a decade. Her voice is very soothing. Her voice is very calm although not clean. She's done a lot of backup sining for other singers and sometimes she is known as "Queen of Chorus." She mostly works with JoDongIk, who has been writing for her till her 4th album. Nowadays, she is writing a lot of her own music.

Another Ms. Jang and JoDongIk collaboration. I guess her music should be categorized as a folk. Very Ms. Jang and Mr. Cho (not me!) album, indeed it is. It seems the lyrics seems to have gone a little Gen-X. Not a single track stands out, but I liked the sixth track, BbalGan JaJunGuh TaNeun UCheBu.

One thing about the credit on one of the tracks. On the seventh track, it is noted that GoChanYong from NatSeonSaRamDeul did a solo voice. Man, I was anxious to finally hear his voice apart from his companions. Geez, there wasn't a thing that I would call "solo voice" in the track, except for a very short (about 5 seconds?), quiet scat in the background at the very end of it. I think this was a over-advertisement, definitely.

This fifth album has a lot more of her own work. Still, Mr. Cho (not me!) writes a lot for her and always works with her on the CD.

I liked the third track, Spiderman and BbalGan JaJeonGeo TaNeun WuCheBu. Although her quieter songs have done well with the public, but I liked these more up-beat ones.

JangPilSun is one of the best female vocal in GaYo history. Her husky voice fascinated so many people in these 10 years. She started her own duo SoRiDuUl but she got the name as back vocal of other artists. Her back vocal made the songs deep and mild. There is her peak ability on this her 5th solo album. With the ultra session of JoDongIk Bands the music is simple and well-organized. On the lyrics she says both loose life and hope for life also. Perhaps her voice will cure your painful soul.
