1 Biography or Not

She started her career as a member of HaeBaRaGi[Sunflower], Korean folk group of 70s and SinChonBlues. Especially since SinChonBlues is a nest of many early great Korean musicians like KimHyeonSik, EomInHo, LeeJeongSeon, her early solo works were composed under the influence of blues. From then she has had several titles as a musician and actress of the theater. Finally, becoming actress became the road not taken to her because she chose singing as a more close way to express herself.

Her pace is never in haste. From 1986 when her first solo album was released, she made only five albums. But all these albums seem like juice took out of her soul.

HanYeongAe on the stage gives very strong impression. She is a rather small person but she fills the whole stage when singing before the audience. From top to bottom she becomes one delicate instrument. Each her gesture and gaze have their own meaning. Experimental joint between music and drama is her recent concern in her live concerts. --vanylla, 2000

This is her second album. This is kind of old, but the people who made the album are very talented. I haven't had the chance to check out her other albums, but this one is probably the one of the best ones. The album is dedicated to Yu, JaeHa. Her very weak point as an artist is that she doesn't write her own songs. So many people count her 4th album [Play:HanYeongAe4BulEoORaBaRamA.mp3 BulEoORa BaRamA; Blow, Wind] as a turning point of her musical career. In this album she writes several songs and all lyrics. But this album didn't achieve commercial success because her old fans want her to remain blues singer of early 90's. At her first days her voice compared with JanisJoplin. But now her music changes to more deep and diverse directions and anybody no more defines her only blues singer.

[Play:HanYeongAe4SangSaGgot(Acu).mp3 SangSaGgot; Lovelorn Flower], the best song of this album, has the lyrics based on Buddhist circle of life. A woman who is lovelorn suddenly realizes that a network of human beings is like great circle. (as like SmashingPumpkins' song,'End is the Beginning is the End') ShinYunCheol(2nd son of ShinJungHyeon)'s whirring guitar play doubled the image of circle.

This is her fifth album. Only fifth? It seems she has been around much longer... It was produced by KangHoJung who I think does very good arrangements. I think he brought a lot of "modern" sounding characteristics (e.g., "electronic") of this album although quite a few songs had very plain 70-80s sounding melodies.

Bottom line: I don't know if this is her best work, but I like her voice, nontheless. --HongCho, 1999-09-19
