3 # Another Fine Tune You've Got Me Into[ | ]

GILGAMESH - Another Fine Tune You've Got Me Into, 1978 (Charly) [CD: Spalax'96] Phil Lee (elg/acg) - Alan Gowen (elp/syn) - Hugh Hopper (b) - Trevor Tomkins (d) Rec: 18-28 Jul 1978 - Loc: Foel Studios, Llanfair (Wales) - Pr: Gilgamesh Tracks: 1. Darker Brighter [AG] (5:40) - 2. Bobberty - Theme For Something Else [AG/PL] (10:49) - 3. Waiting [PL] (2:25) - 4. Play Time [AG] (7:14) - 5. Underwater Song [AG] (7:04) - 6. Foel'd Again [AG/HH] (1:50) - 7. T.N.T.F.X. [AG] (2:54) [Note : this album was previously released on CD as a (now deleted) '2on1' on the Century label, with Soft Heap's eponymous album]

A quiet progressive rock outfit with strong jazz fusion leanings, Gilgamesh emerged from the fringes of the fertile and beloved "Canterbury scene" as sort of an astute yet humorless kid brother to Hatfield and the North. Leader Alan Gowen had in fact held the keyboard stool in an embryonic Hatfield before forming Gilgamesh. Singer Amanda Parsons also contributed crystalline backing vocals to both groups. Gowen hailed from Harlow, England and had played jazz in local pubs with, among others, Roger Odell (later of CMU and Shakatak. With Gilgamesh, Gowen attempted to erase the division between composed and improvised music, placing emphasis on texture and mood. But a lack of skilled songwriting doomed his group to an artistic no-man's land, and they broke up after one album, after which Gowen jumped between various Canterbury-related projects (Canterburians never stay in any one place too long).

In 1978 Gowen helped found National Health, then re-formed Gilgamesh for a reunion LP, Another Fine Tune You've Got Me Into. This second effort features the talents of legendary Soft Machine bassist Hugh Hopper. Gowen teamed with Hopper for several more albums, most notably Two Rainbows Daily. In 1982, Gowen succumbed to leukemia. National Health dedicated their third release to his memory. Entitled D.S. Al Coda, it includes compositions by Gowen that were written but never recorded. ? Peter Kurtz

AMG REVIEW: Fairly predictable keyboard-dominated fusion from a weaker limb of the Canterbury family tree. There are some dreamy themes hinted at, but most are undeveloped or undercut by irritating time signatures. Fans of this kind of music might be pleased, but better examples can be found on mid-period Soft Machine or the two Hatfield and the North albums. ? Peter Kurtz

AMG REVIEW: A reunion effort by Alan Gowen and company, minus Amanda Parsons and plus Hugh Hopper. ? Peter Kurtz

These are previously unreleased Gilgamesh recordings from 1973-1975, with three separate lineups, although keyboardist Alan Gowen, guitarist Phil Lee, and Mike Travis are present on all eight tracks. It's overly cerebral instrumental jazz-rock fusion of the Canterbury school. The keyboards, varied by Gowen between piano, electric piano, and synths, are very prominent, as are rapidly ascending guitar solos of mathematical precision. The similarities to National Health ? which several of Gilgamesh's members would play with as well ? are apparent, as are similarities to the late recordings by Soft Machine. Sometimes these (usually long) pieces are broken up by more reflective soft interludes, but generally it's lacking in melody and devoid of warm emotion, overcompensated for by the technically impressive chops of the players. The liner notes feature an extensive history of the careers of the band and Gowen. ? Richie Unterberger
