I first saw his name on the info sheet for EoEoBu Project Band. He played Korean traditional percussions, if I remember correctly. I guess it might be a little ackward to call him a gayo musician. He was trained in piri (Korean traditional recorder-like instrument) and taepyeongso (another Korean traditional melodic instrument) at college and he went on to UCLA for a graduate study in musicolgy (I think). He is currently a leader of a percussion group (I think international).
This is his first solo (?) work, which is performed by a lot of his associates as well as by himself. All the words, music and orchestration were done by him. It's more like his composition work.
As far as the color of the album, you can say it's a world music based toward Korean theme. A couple of the tracks are based on Korean traditional melodies, and some on Korean rhythmic elements. Actually, this shouldn't be called gayo (in the modern sense) at all since none of the songs are not going to be popular in the sense of gayo popularity. He is trying a lot to mix gukak (Korean traditional music)'s elements (especially its melodic ones) with the western music. It's not exactly what I hoped it to be as a gayo, but still his work is very interesting to listen to.
Anyway, LeeSangEun is featured on the first track, singing a variation on MongGeumPo TaRyeong (a Korean traditional folk song). Also, GangSanE sings the fourth song.
Personally, I like the 11th track, Moonlight Dance which is also based on a Korean traditional folk song melody (I forgot the name) the best. It has an Irish orchestration that makes it unique. I also liked the first track, Moonlight Sailing. --HongCho, 1998-01-02
