길리 스미스는 동반자 데이빗 앨런과 함께 공을 떠나 에스파냐의 마요르카로 가서 요양한다. 여러가지 사연이 있었지만 주요 원인은 마약문제와 자식들 문제였다. 이곳 데야에서 요양하던 그들은 각자 솔로음반을 발매하는데 길리 스미스의 이 솔로 음반이 바로 Mother이다. 앨런이 프로듀싱을 해주었다.
이 앨범에서 길리는 여성성의 본질에 대해 이야기하고 있으며 샥티 요니(Shakti Yoni, 신성한 보지)로서의 자각이 더욱 확실해졌음을 노래하고 있다. 능동적인 여성상(I am a fool), 만물의 어머니(Back to the World, Mother, Shakti Yoni, Taliesin), 억압에서의 탈피(Keep the Children Free, OK Man This is Your World), 매춘(Street Version)등 이러한 가사들은 이 앨범을 완연한 페미니즘 음반으로 만들고 있다.
이후 마더 공의 사운드가 천편 일률적으로 변해갔던 것과는 달리 이 앨범은 꽤 다양한 사운드를 담고있어 의미가 있는데 Keep the Children Free의 타블라 연주나 공 스타일의 Shakti Yoni, 온갖 효과음과 나레이션이 난무하는 Back to the Womb, 왠지 오리엔탈리즘적인 느낌이 드는 I am a Fool등을 들어보면 백화점처럼 여러가지 스타일을 들려주고 있다. Next Time Ragtime에서는 진짜 웨스턴 분위기를 내고있고 Taliesin에서는 나레이션과 음악을 조화롭게 구성하여 한편의 이야기를 들려주고 있다.
이 앨범을 홍보하기 위해 길리는 마더 공을 결성하여 공연을 가진다. 마더 공은 유지되면서 계속 활동을 하게되는데 재즈락으로 흘렀던 공에 비해 호크윈드Hawkwind 멤버들의 수혈을 받은 스페이스 사운드로 흘러간 마더 공이 생겨나는 것이다. -- 거북이 2003-4-5 3:33

이 시기는 호크윈드 출신의 로버트 칼버트가 참여하여 전체적으로 색서폰 사운드가 강화된 시절이다. 이전 시기의 사운드에는 공 출신의 디디에 마헤어베가 있어서 그랬는지 재즈락적인 색채가 짙었는데 그가 나가고 로버트 칼버트가 들어와서 마더 공의 사운드는 완연히 스페이스 사운드가 되었다. 호크윈드와 공이 만나 낳은 사운드가 마더 공이라고 하면 크게 틀리지 않을 것이다. 여기서 길리 특유의 여성적 섬세함이 결합되어 묘하게 몽롱한 그룹이 되었다.
전체적으로 보면 길리의 보컬 대 로버트 칼버트의 색서폰, 그리고 해리 윌리엄슨의 키보드의 구도로 음악이 진행되는데, 이건 캔터베리의 또다른 여걸 다그마 크라우제DagmarKrause가 아트 베어즈ArtBears에서 점했던 것과 비슷하다. 길리는 밴드의 리더이기 때문에 다그마보다도 더 큰 부분을 점하고있는 것이다. 길리는 프로그레시브 락 씬에서 여성은 어떤 기여를 할 수 있는가에 대한 하나의 답안이라고 할 만하다. 길리는 목소리라는 중요한 위치를 점하고 또 밴드의 리더 역할을 충분히 해냈기 때문에 남성 위주의 락계에서 여성적 감성, 페미니즘적 시각을 보여줄 수 있었다.

문제가 있다면 이 시기의 음악은 너무 차이가 없다. 로버트 칼버트가 들어온 이후 스페이스적인 사운드가 강화된 대신 락적인 톤이 너무 죽어버려서 앨범을 다 들어도 앨범을 듣는 것인지 한 곡을 듣는 것인지 모를 정도다. 길리가 특유의 몽롱한 속삭임을 읊조리면 로버트 칼버트가 분위기 맞춤용으로 색서폰 멜로디를 한번 깔아주거나 해리 윌리엄슨이 우주적인 사운드를 담은 키보드 연주를 까는 뭐 그런 식이다. 뭐 가끔 들으면 길리의 섹시한(사실 그녀가 31년생이라는 것을 생각해보면 섹시하다는 느낌도 싹 사라지지만...-_-) 신음소리나 스페이스 사운드가 꽤 훌륭한 것은 사실이다. 하지만 얼추 열장이나 되는 음반, 라이브를 빼도 6장이나 되는 음반에서 똑같은 사운드를 들려주는 것은 문제가 좀 있다.
하지만 길리가 처음에 들여왔던 재즈락 사운드가 전혀 없는 것은 아니어서 Wild Child에 수록된 Augment and Lady같은 곡에서는 치밀한 재즈락 연주를 들려준다. 라이브에서도 그런 재즈락적인 요소는 종종 드러난다.
길리 스미스의 음악을 듣다보면 도어즈Doors의 짐 모리슨이 낸 An American Prayer라는 낭송 음반이 생각난다. 데이빗 앨런도 가끔 그런 식의 자기표현적인 곡들을 넣곤 했는데 그것은 길리의 영향이 아닌가 싶다.

여튼 이 시기를 끝으로 길리 스미스와 해리 윌리엄슨의 결혼과 음악생활은 끝난다. 길리는 새로운 밴드를 만들고 솔로활동을 시작하는데 역시 이전과 큰 차이를 보여주진 않아 실망스럽다.
이 시기는 96년에 발매된 라이브 하나 구매하면 충분히 즐길 수 있음을 말해주고 싶다. -- 거북이 2003-2-2 13:18
