1 Biography or Not

Koggiri 코끼리

I saw these guys for the first time last night (22/8/98) and I thought they were just great. They were playing at a live venue near Hong-ik university called Freebird. There is a lot of equipment at Freebird but really the sound setup is far less that ideal. I was impressed by the bands professionalism and control of the sound - very clear, very balanced. If anyone had done a recording, I'm sure it would have made a good live album. I'd like to see them at a venue where there is space for people to move and see how they'd handle the audience.
Appently Koggiri have released one album and are getting airplay on Korean cable tv. Yesterday, they also had their debut on telelvision (KBS I think they said.)

They are a pop rock band that play a mix of original songs and an interesting selection of rock classics (Leon Russell's Tightrope, Steely Dan's Do it again, Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild, and Cindy Lauper's Girl's Just want to Have Fun given a semi-reggae twist.) I suspect these guys will be mainstream very soon. At the moment they are a very enjoyable live act.

KoGgiRi ("Elephant" in Korean) are LeeByeongHun, LeeJaeHak, and YuWonYeong. Their music shares somewhat with IlGiYeBo, but with more of rock influence. It's no wonder that Kang, HyeonMin of IlGiYeBo had a quite a bit of participation on this project. Also IlGiYeBo as a group was featured in one of the tracks.

This 16-track (including several short fillers) CD came out quite early in 1998, I believe, but I don't think they caught attention of the public. Their music isn't bad. It's just that it can attract neither the idol-following teenagers nor the head-banging rock crowds. :) If you count the actual songs, there are about ten, including the song with the same name as the group. You can say it can characterize this team. It's a upbeat, funny, light pop number.

Bottom line: If you like IlGiYeBo's work so far, I think you will like this CD.
