The worldwide progressive rock reissue label, SiWan Records digged the multi-synthesizer player JoYun out. His music is similar to KlausSchulze or PopolVuh. But the mood is not of German. If you hear [Play:JoYun1BangRangYaIn.mp3 BangRangYaIn; Traveller like Gypsy] or [Play:JoYun1Glissang.mp3 Glissang], you can feel rest and pastoral mood. His behavior is under curtain but composing endlessly. Most popular song is [Play:JoYun1IlEoBeoRinCheonGuk.mp3 IlEoBeoRin CheonGuk; Lost Heaven]. It is limited edition and has pyramid type gimmick cover.

Subject: (fwd) Yun: Excellent Korean symphonic prog Newsgroups: rec.music.progressive Date: Wed, 30 Oct 1996 08:35:49 GMT Lines: 18 Sender: mailto:ptlk@netcom21.netcom.com

This disc came out recently on the Si-Wan label, very lush symphonics, eastern percussive elements a-la Jade Warrior/Kitajima, some Korean vocals, and a very solid progressive rock structure. This is probably the best new sympho I've heard this year. The title is "Mobius Strip"

There's some heavy duty gimmick packaging to deal with, though.
An ovesize digi-pak folds apart 4 ways to form sort of a cross, then in the center there's a little pyramid. Under the pyramid is where the CD and booklet are stored. Anyway, check it out for the music.

음악에 대한 이야기 반, 포장에 대한 얘기 반이네요...
어쨌건 조윤의 음악이 세계적으로 좀 더 많은 사람들에게 알려지기를.....

Jo Yun is a superb multi-instrumentalist from Jaeju Island in Korea. Mobius Strip is a wonderful journey to a unique musical world. I thought I could compare him to Kitaro but there is so much more here, nothing like new age. This is darker and much gloomier at times. A lot of it reminds me of early Krautrock like Faust or TD. Jo plays a beautiful acoustic guitar, among tons of other different instruments.

The album opens with the chaotic clanging of church bells which swiftly moves into a tribal rhythm with drums and heavy vibes. The aching cries of mutant stringed things fade in from the background. Plucked harps join the fray for a while...some more crying and then a gunshot.

This is just a peek into the first minute or so of the CD. There is quite an abundance of music to enjoy here and Jo Yun's style of progressive rock sustains the interest. Some of the recording quality is a bit murky, I'm not sure if it's deliberate or not but it does add to the mystique of the sound. Heart-stopping female vocalist Ma- Ri Seong puts on a brilliant performance for "Lost Heaven" and Kim San adds his voice to "Epilogue (Whirlwind)."

Here's an interesting excerpt from the liner notes about the last piece: "The content of this track was inspired by Nikolai Gogol's (1809- 1852) Diary of A Madman (1935). This is a track which portrays the dissolution of all dreams. Furthermore, this track seems to emphasize Franz Kafka's (1883-1924) statement in which he insinuates that the modern society people are destined to suffer in the evil world of chaos. The track emphasizes that, in this continuous chaos, mankind must believe in themselves and must be reborn."

The CD case has one of the most beautiful package designs I have ever seen. The back cover of the album opens up with four separate flaps, each having a picture of a peacock feather. When the album is opened, it has the shape of a cross, the square middle has 4 more flaps that are triangle shaped and fold up into a small pyramid. All of this is exquisitely detailed and also contains information and lyrics. Underneath the pyramid is where the CD booklet is located, and the CD is in a pouch inside of the book. Most of the printing on the album is in Korean but there are a few English parts.

I want to thank my friend ciclos73 from Seoul for sending me this along with a very beautiful holiday card. It brought a wave of warmth into my vacation, that I really needed. I truly enjoy listening to this excellent progressive rock from Korea!
