1 Biography or Not[ | ]

I don't know much about him, really. I heard his name mentioned somewhere in a BBS. I just recognized his name when I was browsing through some old CDs because nothing new in the store interested me. His singing is like MinYo, or MinJungGaYo style. Very strong and expressive. Something to experience.

I am assuming this is his first album. But possibly not. This is the only one I saw so far. I don't think not that many young people will like his singing or this album. But, still Mr. Jang himself and other musicians who made this album deserves a proper appreciation. Some of the songs are his original composition, but quit a few of them seems to be someone else's. The inner notes does not say much about the credits, so it's hard to tell.

The notable musicians on this albums are ImDongChang (p), KimGyuHyeong (perc.), and KimGwangSeok (g).

JangSaIk appeared one day. He never acted as musician till his age 44. He won the JeonJu DaeSaSeub(Korean Traditional musician contest) in 94. And he debuted in 95 with this album. Sadly before him, it's very hard to find the music from traditional. He spreaded the traditional style popular music. In this album unique pianist ImDongChang played piano. The piano sound made JangSaIk's music became elegant and crossover. JangSaIk's voice is clear and turbid. Do you ask me what's that? Just listen!! His vocal style contained sympathy of Korean rural area and common farmers. He sung some GaYo in his style like [Play:JangSaIk1BomBi.mp3 BomBi; Spring Rain] or [Play:JangSaIk1NimEunMeonGotE.mp3 NimEun Meon GotE] of ShinJungHyeon.

Well, it's another "old" album, but I find JangSaIk's efforts interesting. I don't think his musical style can be considered "gayo" or "pop" per se. It's more like "modern" MinYo, Korean traditional folk music. His melodic composition, orchestration and voicing methods are definitely rooted in MinYo.

Yeah, I think he would be a counterpart to western folk singers. I mean it's folk music and the lyrics play an important role. Most of the tracks are from poems, very Korean ones.

Bottom line: You want a taste of Korean traditional folk music in a modern form? Try this.
