 "Flow Goes The Universe

(Gyroscope GYR 6602) CD and Cassette

Performer, composer, collaborator, busker and comedian, Laraaji is an unusual musical force, whose New Jersey youth was spent in various school orchestras and musical projects where he studied several disciplines and even won a state-wide composers' competition.

Having completed a music scholarship at Howard University College of Fine Arts in Washington D.C., he moved to New York and for a while tried his hand at stand-up comedy and acting at nightspots like the Village Gate, The Bitter End, The Improv and Gillies, which led to TV commercials Off-Broadway and films.

It was however the early 70s that brought radical change to Laraaji's life and his musical direction. While one day pawning his folk guitar, he made an impulsive decision to swap it for a zither; an instrument he had only previously seen played by folk singers in Greenwich Village. Through several months of steady experimentation he arrived at his own version of an electric, open-tuned zither played freestyle. The sound caught on immediately and throughout seven years of dedicated busking in New York, Laraaji greeted, relaxed, inspired and fascinated many audiences.

With the many personal connections made during these busking years, Laraaji began to give professional performances which included collaborations with choreographers and musicians. In 1979 Laraaji found a note in his zither case from BRIAN ENO suggesting they meet up. The result two months later was the first of many international recordings, Day Of Radiance.

His album Flow Goes The Universe is in many ways a collection of the many aspects of the man; not just his music but his personality too. It reflects the notion that things do not necessarily have to have a beginning or end nor even a specific order. Almost a contradiction of itself, this album is at once meditational and rhythmical; serious and humorous. Produced by Michael Brook, Flow Goes The Universe is edited from several concerts and studio performances around the globe.

Audio Active and Laraaji

"The Way Out Is The Way In" (Gyroscope GYR 6615 - CD only)

Audio Active are Japan's best kept secret boasting an arsenal of crazy dubtronics and tranced out trip-hop beats combined withthe deep, dub-heavy sensibilities of Jamaican Reggae with the raw experimentation of their dance underground mentors, primarily Adrian Sherwood's On U Sound label. Audio Active were approached by Toyko based British entrepreneur/promoter Ray Hearn to remix and remodel a collection of Laraaji's unreleased tapes and existing songs. Interestingly, neither party was particularly familiar with the other's work, and the brief for Audio Active was to exaggerate, amplify and extemporize Laraaji's metaphysical musings and musical backdrops. Laraaji's messages of spirituality through laughter meditation take on a whole new identity as New Age theory meets the dance underground head on. The result is a multicolored collage of modern styles incorporating elements of Trip-Hop, Trance, Acid Jazz and Ambient Dub.
