Keun Bawui Eolgul 큰바위얼굴 Let's see... I was in my local live music bar waiting for a band I liked when I heard some music over the sound system that stood out for its clarity and bounce. I had to know what it was so I went and asked the guy behind the bar. He replied that it was the next band that was setting up.
Live, they were enjoyable but the sound system was poor and they were probably not concerned with overcoming its limitations. The set was a little only about 6 songs featuring one repeated at the end with elaborations. They were loud and somewhat heavy (compared to the CD). Leader, Cheon Min-chan, worked the audience like someone who's experienced at youth camps and ensured the audience were drawn into to infectious rhythms at times getting them to sing along with choruses and catch phrases.
The music I heard before their set was from their CD Madangnori Rock. It was a kind of rock with a very relaxed feel. Reggae came to mine but it wasn't reggae it was just rock with a solid beat, strong melodies and an open spacey feel. Occassionally songs features a simple major chord proression and simple melodies that are reminiscent of fifties or sixties rock and roll. The CD features 11 tracks which range in style but all in a more or less standard rock format. Although their style is not at the cutting edge of music trends it is fresh and original. I enjoyed it most listening to it on my personal stereo where I could appreciate the balanced production and range of musical textures.
