1 Adventure of BeonGae (1997) [ | ]

(HaeGwang GiHoek; Yedang Records)

As always, I got attracted to this CD because of the name and the cover design (by GwonJinA). And this was a good buy.

Their music reminded me a lot of the early years of DongMulWon. Maybe more of pop/rock influence (hey, this is 90s!). Funny and interesting lyrics and music. Lyrics are very short and simple, but their musical performance is very well done. I like this kind of music and lyric combinations. Hope they do well in this time of "Spice Girls" era of "idols".

An example of their comical sense is the two tracks with identical melody titled ToGgiEui ByeonMyeong (Hare's Excuse) and GeoBugI HangBeon (Tortoise's Protest). A tried concept, but very well done, nonetheless.

One thing very obviously incorrect. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but there is a track titled Michael. However, in the song, the vocal pronounce it as "Michelle". I think it's more like a typo, but the lyric has "Michael" all over the page. Oh, well, another mystery in this unfathomable world.

BeonGae are KimJaeMan (guitar), SeoJaeHyeong (keyboard), NamJeongHo (bass), KimSeonJung (drum & percussions).

Another good instictive choice I picked up at the record store. :b I had no idea what kind of music they make, but I liked the name (and how they spelled in English) and the design of the album cover (by KwonJiA).

This must be their first album. Their music style is, I should say, pop based on rock. Besides the good performance, I think their strength lies in their sense of humor in the words and of the music that works.

I have no idea why this type of people get more popular exposure. I mean their music has a very good potential to become a pop hit as far as I am concerned. I am really disgusted at the fact that in Korea the performers personalities have greater affect at how popular they become instead of their music. I am not saying that the personalities don't matter in pop culture-dom, but it has too strong an influence in the gayo world.

Anyway, back to the musicians in question. All the songs are good, which I am very pleased with. A couple of them have very funny complementary lyrics (the third and the 13th tracks).

One thing to note. Although the title of the eighth track is written as Michael, the singer sings it as "Michelle." I don't know whether the song was initially written about a woman, or it was a pure misunderstanding of the person who wrote how the name is spelled. Oh, well. Otherwise, I would say it's near-perfect album (with a bit of exaggerations, of course). --HongCho, 1998-01-13
