2 Designing clothes to provoke an emotional response[ | ]

"Love is a fundamental human emotion", say Satoru Tanaka, whose Autumn & Winter collection was entitled LOVE AND LOVE ARE LOVE FOR LOVE'. "It can be very simple, but it can also imply being hurt and causing pain, and the cold isolation of being alone". Tanaka's third season on the Tokyo collection was an exercise in sharply silhouetted all-black dressing that burned with its creator's intense passion for clothes. "In making these clothes, which are stripped of all unnecessary embellishment," he says, "I included the negative aspects of love, a pure feeling that resonates inside oneself."

Shining under a piercing spotlight, the young designer's message was condensed into a single line running down the back of several styles. "I always want to keep some light in one part," explains Tanaka. "You get an idea, but even if you do your best, in reality there are times when you come up against an impasse, but you don't just abandon everything. You might be feeling 99% impossible, but there is always that 1% of hope, and that glimmer of hope is there in the collection." Having pared ornamentation down to an absolute minimum, Tanaka was able to project his thoughts and aspirations onto the world. They may be simple, but the beauty of their exquisite silhouettes is the result of an exhaustive process of trial and error. "From the positioning of the pocket to the Length of patterns, everything is exactingly considered down to the last millimeter. If I don't like it I do it all over again. I am especially fastidious about the balance and the flow of the lines, because of my low-cut bottom design." he adds

"I want to jolt the emotions." is a phrase Tanaka repeats over and over again, and his work is imbued with the energy of a clash between his stoicism and passion for fashion. "I'm often told my clothes are hard to understand, but why should I make easy-to-understand thing? he quizzes. " I have absolutely no interest in things that are an obvious reflection of the times, I'd far prefer to make items that provoke an emotional response, that have a deeper resonance. I feel that today's fashion is contrived to make consumers passive, that the future of fashion seems to be about nothing more than production for consumption. We're at a stage to wonder where the fashion is heading, it seems that we've forgotten the importance to stop and think seriously. I feel a sense of crisis." While Tanaka is experiencing conflict with his faith in fashion, his spirit to establish his identity without restrictions is reflected in the words "No Categorize" written across the final look of his latest show. "People continually seek to categorize everything, but everybody has a different personality, and L think we need to express our originality more freely."

Tanaka defines fashion as : "Expressing oneself without deceit. Being able to project integrity." He says that his inspiration is found in the realms of his imagination. "I'm not constantly searching for inspiration," he explains. "The things people create already have the message of the person who made them, so rather than being inspired by existing things, truthfully expressing the idea that flow from the depths of my mind is the most important thing." 여기서 뻑이간다

The pensive designer is proud to announce that he will open a new shop in Tokyo's Aoyama district in May, a significant step in the development of his brand. When asked about his outlook for the future, Tanaka says " Try to remain uninfluenced by my surroundings, make creations in a way that stays true to myself, and always keep evolving. I want to keep on challenging beyond categorized concepts of fashion. Overseas development in future is also in my view." As this young creator continues to hone his skills and sensitivity, his unique worldview looks likely it will find an ever-wider audience, both in Japan and beyond
