마이크 러더포드의 첫 번째 솔로 앨범으로 And Then There Were Three 발표 후 준비에 들어가 1980년 제네시스의 앨범 Duke가 완성되기 전 발표되어 영국 앨범차트 13위에 오르는 나름의 성과를 거둔다. 먼저 주목할 것은 참여 멤버들. 사이몬 필립스와 모리스 퍼트가 참여하여 드럼과 타악기 파트의 완성도를 높였고 거기에 제네시스의 옛 동료인 앤소니 필립스가 키보드를 연주해 주었다. 노엘 멕칼라는 지명도가 다소 떨어지기는 하지만 앨범 전체에 걸쳐 들려주는 소울풀한 보컬은 꽤 들을 만 하다. 영국판과 미국판의 곡 순서가 다른데 영국판은 Smallcreep’s Day Suite가 A면에 수록되어 있으나 미국판은 B면에 수록되어 있으며 이점은 CD로 재발매 될 때도 그대로 지켜진다. 이 글에서는 영국판을 따른다.
Smallcreep’s Day 조곡은 피터 브라운의 소설에서 영감을 얻어 작곡한 곡으로 제네시스 관련 멤버들이 발표하는 음반 중 한 면 전체를 조곡형식의 곡은 이 곡이 마지막이 된다. 총 7개의 파트로 구성되어 있으며 전체 앨범에서 가장 중요한 곡이다. 곳곳에서 러더포드의 기타가 의외의 솜씨를 발휘하고 있으며 특히 앤소니 필립스의 키보드 연주는 나름의 위치를 확보하며 곡의 완성도를 높여주고 있다.
첫 곡 덕분에 다분히 그 비중이 줄어든 감이 있지만 나머지 곡들의 완성도도 꽤 뛰어나며 특히 Time and Time Again 이나 Romani 같은 곡이 주목할만하다. 전체적으로 우수한 참여 멤버들의 연주와 러더포드의 깔끔한 작곡이 합쳐져 80년대 제네시스의 다른 음반들과 비교해도 그다지 뒤지지 않는 좋은 앨범이다. 아마도 이런 스타일의 앨범을 몇 장 더 발표했다면 러더포드의 음악성은 이후 상당한 평가를 받았을 것이지만 오히려 마이크 & 메카닉스라는 제네시스보다 더 대중적인 팝록 취향의 그룹을 결성 성공을 거두게 된다.
