재능 있는 프로듀서인 Bob Ezrin을 초빙하여 완성한 게이브리얼의 첫 번째 솔로 앨범. 이 앨범부터 4번째 솔로 앨범까지 그는 앨범에 특별한 제목을 별도로 달지 않았는데 대신 앨범 자켓의 그림으로 각 음반을 별칭을 붙이는 것이 일반적이다. 킹 크림슨의 리더 로버트 프립이 몇곡에서 기타를 연주해 주었고, 이후 오랫동안 그의 앨범에 참여하게 되는 뛰어난 베이시스트 토니 레빈과 키보디스트 레리 페스트가 참여했다. 문제는 음반의 완성도.
최근에 와서 그 평가가 조금은 달라지고 있지만 그래도 그가 제네시스 탈퇴 직전에 만든 The Lamb lies down on Broadway를 생각한다면 이 앨범은 무척 실망스럽다. 이 앨범의 가장 큰 문제점은 그가 어떤 음악을 할 것인지에 대한 구체적인 개념이 없는 상태에서 이런 저런 시도의 나열만을 보여주고 있다는 점에 있으며 이것은 바로 앨범의 일관성 부재로 나타난다. 이러한 일관성의 부재는 단순한 개인적인 실험으로서의 의미는 있을지언정 70년대 초반의 음악계를 거치며 높아져 버린 당시 청자들의 귀를 충족시키기에는 어려움이 있었을 것이다. 당시의 제네시스가 Trick of the tail 이나 Wind and Wuthering과 같은 음반으로 나름의 성과를 거두고 있는 시점이었음을 생각하면 이 앨범에 대한 아쉬움은 더욱 크다.
이 앨범의 전체 분위기를 가장 잘 전해주는 곡은 다름아닌 첫 곡 Moribund the burgermeister. 부분적으로 The Lamb Lies down on Broadway의 수록곡들을 연상케 하며 분위기의 변화가 심한 곡인데, 결정적인 느낌이 없고 분위기가 바뀔때 마다 그 부분이 전체와 어울리지 못해 따로 노는 듯 어색한 느낌을 준다. 거의 대부분의 수록곡에서 이러한 느낌은 그대로 유지된다. 어색함의 느낌이 발전적으로 새로운 어떤것을 만들어 내는데 성공했다면 좋았겠지만 게이브리얼은 아직 그러한 수준에는 도달하지 못하였다. 7번째 곡인 Waiting for the Big one은 앨범 전체에서 느껴지는 어색함이 가장 극대화된 곡. 스탠더드 곡을 부르는 블루스 가수 같은 느낌의 게이브리얼은 듣는 사람이 무안한 느낌이 들 정도이다.
혹평 일색인것 같지만 그래도 그 안에서 보이는 몇 가지 수확물이 있는데, 하나는 이후 그의 영원한 싱글이 될 Solsbury Hill로 가사중 일부에는 제네시스의 남은 멤버들에게 보내는 작별 인사와도 같은 내용이 담겨있다. ("take your things, I've come to take you home") 또 다른 하나는 기존 아트록 방법론을 따른 마지막곡 Here Comes The Flood로 앨범 전체의 혼란스러운 분위기를 정리하는 뛰어난 곡. 그가 아직까지 나름의 감각을 잃지 않았음을 증명하는 곡이기도 하다. 하지만, 제네시스와 차별화된 음악을 추구한 그의 첫 음반에서 가장 기억에 남는곡이 전통적인 아트록 성향의 곡이라는 점은 이 앨범이 가지는 한계점을 명확히 보여준다.
두세곡의 괜찮은 곡을 제외한 나머지 곡들 대부분은 나름의 실험성에도 불구하고 핵심에 도달하지 못하고 떠돈다. 제네시스 탈퇴후 그의 음악이 변화하는 과정을 살펴보고자 하는 팬들에게는 좋은 '자료'가 될 수 있으나 그외에는 그다지 추천하고 싶지 않은 음반.
